Walter LeRoy Mills, 75, of Des Moines, died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Tuesday, March 30, 2021.
Visitation with family receiving friends will be from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 2nd with a Celebration of Life service beginning 11:00 a.m. at Lighthouse Community Church, 7705 Indianola Ave. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Des Moines.
Memorials can be directed to the family.
Walter ‘Walt’ LeRoy Mills, son of Garnet and Blanche (Cook) Mills, was born on January 22, 1946, in Green Mountain, Iowa. He graduated from Green Mountain High School with the class of 1964 and then joined the Navy to serve his country. He was stationed on the U.S.S. Pictor and in the reserves from 1965-1971.
After serving his country, he rose to Master Craftsman in sheet metal fabrication and worked for several local businesses. He later taught technical school and adult education classes in plumbing, basic home maintenance, and HVAC.
Walt was blessed with five daughters through his first union. He met the love of his life Cheryl and they were married on March 9, 1985. Together, they enjoyed square dancing, camping, motorcycling, and spending time with their family. Walt also enjoyed cribbage, ice cream, Pepsi, TV, puzzles, and he was an excellent back-scratcher.
Surviving Walt are his wife Cheryl of 36 years, children, Diana (Rich) Van Allen, Barbara (Steve) Oxley, Dawn Mills, Chad (Jane) Terry, Brad (Shannon) Terry, Jodi (Daniel) Baker, Monica (Trent) Johnson, Debra (Rob) Novak; siblings Everett (Mary Lou) Mills, Janet Schoonover, Carolyn (Charles) Rine, 17 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren and other family. Walt was preceded in death by his parents, brothers LaVerne and Marvin Mills, sister Mary Beth, and many aunts and uncles.
