Virginia “Jean” Solem

Virginia “Jean” Solem 98 of Des Moines, Iowa passed away on Monday, July 6, 2020 at Prairie Hills Care Center.

Virginia Marjorie Smith was born in Ottumwa, Iowa on December 2, 1921; she was the daughter of Russell Daniel and Goldie May (Carl) Smith. She attended school in the area of her birth. On January 25, 1942 Virginia was united in marriage to Norris Roger Solem in Des Moines, Iowa and Virginia and Norris made Des Moines their forever home. Virginia was a founding member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepard and remained a very dedicated member. She loved to read, was a marvelous cook and baker and was always a very constant companion and caretaker of Norris and her family which gave her great joy.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Joe(Becky) Solem of Des Moines, Jack Solem of Des Moines and Judy Lorch of Phoenix, Arizona, grandchildren, Tom Dooley, Todd(Corina) Dooley, Gina(Mike) Buckner, Brian(Mya) Solem, great-grandchildren, Chase Rounds, Cyrus Rounds, Tony(Autum) Dooley, Chelsea Dooley, Kayleigh Buckner, Megan Buckner, Michael J. Buckner, Faith Cronk, Josh Cronk, Micah Cronk, Tricia Solem, Miranda Solem and great-great-granddaughter, KellieAnne Dooley.

In death Virginia rejoins her parents, Russell and Goldie Smith, husband, Norris, brother, William Smith and two sisters in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Sunset Memorial Gardens Chapel at 7601 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, Iowa 50321. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. also at the chapel, face masks requested. Memorials may be directed to her church Lutheran Church of the Good Shepard, 3820 S W 9th Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50315.
