Philip Michael ‘Mike’ Broderick, 51, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, January 14, 2024, after a valiant battle with cancer. Mike was born November 14, 1972, to Phil and Eleanor Broderick in Monmouth, Illinois and was the youngest of 5 siblings. Mike moved to Cherokee, Iowa as an early teen where he actively participated in several sports throughout high school. It was there that he met and later married the love of his life, Emily.
After graduating from Wayne State University with a degree in Criminal Justice, Mike went on to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming an Army Infantryman. He joined the Army in 1998 as a Specialist and spent his first four years at the Old Guard in Arlington Cemetery, where he laid to rest countless soldiers during his tenure. Throughout his 20 years of service, Mike attended numerous military schools and received multiple awards. Always improving and growing, Mike ended his military career as a well-respected Captain in 2018.
Mike's dedication to service extended to his community, where he fulfilled his second dream of becoming a firefighter and joined the Des Moines Fire Department in 2007. Mike served proudly alongside his fellow firefighters, and he loved every moment of it. Even on tough days, he never complained about the task at hand.
Mike and Emily were married September 25, 1998, and went on to build a beautiful family. Together, they had four wonderful daughters – Grace Taylor (21), Ireland Scout (18), Piper Kennedy (17), and Campbell Elise (14). Mike was an exceptional family man who took immense pride in his role as a husband and father. He was his daughters' biggest supporter, always cheering them on in everything they did. Mike was a unique individual with a remarkable mix of candor, discipline, humor, loyalty, and drive – incredible qualities he instilled in his girls.
Mike is survived by his wife Emily, their 4 daughters Grace, Ireland, Piper, and Campbell, brother Tom (Stacy) Broderick, brother John (Kari) Broderick, and sister Kathleen Broderick, and many loving nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father Philip Robert Broderick and his mother Eleanor Marie Mosier Broderick. Mike will be missed beyond measure by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
