John Elias Miras

John Elias Miras passed away on March 16, 2025, in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 89.

Born on August 13, 1935, in Aegina, Greece, John’s life spanned continents and decades marked by dedication to family, faith, and community.

After completing business school, John pursued a successful career in the restaurant industry. His entrepreneurial drive led to the creation and ownership of several well-known establishments across the Midwest, including Yanni's Greek and Italian Restaurant, The Radish, and The Magic Grill. These restaurants became cherished gathering places that reflected his passion for hospitality and culinary excellence.

John served in the Greek Army from January 1959 to February 1960, demonstrating a deep sense of duty to his country of birth.

In addition to his professional pursuits, John was a talented artist who found expression through his artwork. His creative spirit added depth to a life already rich with purpose.

Faith was a cornerstone of John's life. He was a devoted member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Des Moines and gave generously of his time over the years. His presence was especially felt during the church’s annual Greek Food Fair each June a celebration that highlighted his enduring connection to heritage and community.

John has always been a Greek to the core but honorably became a United States Citizen in 2008. John is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Popi. John is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Nikki Miras Mordini and Megan Miras; and by four grandchildren: Sophia, Maria, Gianna, and Alyssandra. He is also survived by niece Liana and great niece Alexandra in Athens, Greece. His legacy lives on through them and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Brooks Funeral Care, 2135 SW 9th St., Des Moines, Iowa. A funeral service will follow on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at 2:00 PM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1110 35th St., Des Moines, Iowa.
