James "Steve" Cooper




OBITUARY

James S. Cooper (73) passed away peacefully on September 2nd, 2023 after a devastating battle with dementia / Alzheimer’s. Steve, as he was known, was born in Van Nuys, CA on September 13, 1949. His family then moved to San Bernardino, CA where he attended local public schools. He graduated from Pacific H.S. and attended San Bernardino State Univ. for three years.


In 1975, he married Elaine (Mueller) Cooper and they had three children.

Steve became a reporter for the San Bernardino Sun Newspaper and worked as a copy editor, features writer and religion editor, where he won numerous writing awards for his work. In 1989, he moved his family to Des Moines, IA and continued his work, writing and editing for Country Home Magazine, Better Homes and Gardens Magazine, Grey Dog Media, and numerous other publications.


He is survived by his wife Elaine and son Benjamin (Kristen) and their three children Jackson, Chloe and Lucas. He is also survived by Nathaniel (Brianna) and their two children Jubilee and Endeavor. He is also survived by sisters Pam Orlando and Judy (Dale) Bentz, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his precious daughter, Bethany Jeanne Cooper.


Steve remembered with great joy his acceptance of Jesus Christ as his Savior. This event occurred under a tent revival meeting in AZ in May of 1974. Steve will be remembered for his kindness, quick wit, passion for his grandchildren, and love of cars and baseball.


He was greatly loved, and will be missed by his many friends and family.


A memorial service will be held for Steve at First Family Church in Ankeny, IA on September 9th, 2023 at 11:00. A reception will occur both prior to the ceremony (at 9:30) and directly after at the church.
