Glenn Allyn Larson, son of Fred and Clara (Leibrand) Larson was born on October 31, 1934, in Clayton County, Iowa. He was baptized on Christmas Day, 1934 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Guttenburg, IA and confirmed on April 22, 1948, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, Iowa. Glenn graduated Iowa State University in 1957.
While serving active duty in the United States Navy, Glenn was united in marriage to Joyce Anliker of West Bend, Iowa on January 18, 1959, at the United Methodist Church in West Bend. He went on to achieve the rank of Commander while serving in the Naval reserves for 20 years.
Glenn and Joyce moved to Springfield, Illinois where he was employed by Hawkeye Security Insurance Company. This is where he and Joyce had three beautiful girls Lori, Cindy, and Sheri. A company transfer moved them from Springfield to Des Moines, IA in 1972. He retired from EMC Insurance Company in 1994 and continued to live in Des Moines for the rest of his life.
Glenn was a lifelong volunteer in numerous areas including reading with children at school, providing services/devotions at nursing homes, reading for the blind, and visiting with cardiac patients through Mended Hearts, just to name a few. Glenn was active in Lutheran church work, a member of MOAA (Military Officers of America), a huge Iowa State Fan, a wonderful woodwork craftsman, and a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Glenn passed away on June 28, 2022. He looked forward to going home to be with Jesus and he will be treasured forever by everyone who knew him.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents while he was in college and later on by sisters Ruth and Lucille.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, daughters Lori Larson, Cindy Chalfant, and husband Lloyd. Sheri Wren and husband Devin, all of Des Moines, Iowa. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Hannah, Samantha (Marcus Hales), Jacob, and Noah Chalfant. Danielle (Ricardo King), Kelsey (Adam Sellers), and Kayleigh (Antonio Rivera). Along with his great-grandchildren Metta, Theo, and Rosemae King, Brady Patenaude, Aleishah and Adonis Sellers and Kassandra and Katherine Hales.
Visitation will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 8301 Aurora Ave., Urbandale, IA 50322 on July 2, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. followed by a service celebrating his faith and life at 1:00 p.m. A private burial will be held at a later date at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions may be made to either Gloria Dei Lutheran Church missions, Mt. Olive Lutheran Church or MOAA.
