George Bates, 84, passed away on Friday, July 30, 2021, at Genesis Care Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
George Robert Bates was born on September 4, 1938, in Nebraska; he was the son of George and Evelyn (Holcomb)Bates. Georges parents moved to the Des Moines area and George attended school in Des Moines graduating from Lincoln High School.
George was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Brown at the Open Bible Church in Des Moines on July 4, 1961. They made their home in Des Moines with their two sons.
George had worked for the United States Post Office for many years, he had also worked at the airport and Drake University. George was always a busy man.
Coaching his sons little league Fort Des Moines teams was a big part of his life. He was a Fort Des Moines Hall of famer!! He enjoyed bowling, loved to visit with anyone and tell many stories and he also wrote a book “Bottom Rat Stories” about surviving in tough times.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 61 years Patricia, sons; Bob (Angie) Bates of Des Moines, and Bill (Laura) Bates of Altoona, grandchildren; Sarah Bates, Robert Pester, Alexandrea Bates, Kelly Eisentrager and Luke Kroll , 9 great-grandchildren and sisters Shirley and Donna.
In death he rejoins his parents George and Evelyn Bates and 12 siblings.
Memorial Service will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday, August 9, 2021 at the Berean Church 5299 E. University Ave., Pleasant Hill, IA. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery 7601 Fleur Dr., Des Moines, IA.
