Laverne Shilman, 80, died peacefully on December 6, 2007.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 15, at Grace United Methodist Church, 3700 Cottage Grove, Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m. also at Grace United Methodist Church.

Laverne was born June 24, 1927 to Frederick and Alvina Shilman in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He served in the U.S. Army in 1947 and worked as a carpenter most of his life. On March 8, 1973, he was united in marriage to Anne Singleton. Laverne was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

He will be missed by his wife of 34 years, Anne; brother, Marvin (Evelyn) Shilman; sister, Arlene (Sherman) Davis; brothers-in-law, William (Dixie), Richard (Betty), and Charles (Dee) Singleton; sisters-in-law, Barbara Judy, and Nancy (Richard) Lundgren.

Papa will also be missed by his granddaughter, Kim (Greg) Welbourn; grandsons, Brad, Greg, and Brent Scharf, and great-grandsons, Brandon Scharf and Lathan Welbourn, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gerald and Kenneth and sisters, Caroline and Lorraine.
