Urbandale

Vernon C. Unger, 85, entered his eternal life on Sunday, October 22, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center from complications of pneumonia.

Vernon was born in Buffalo, New York on April 7, 1921 to Raymond and Edna Unger. He grew up in Hamburg, New York and later Fairport, NY and was a 1939 graduate of Fairport High School. In his youth, he was active in sports, including diving, boxing and football. He was an avid outdoorsman, Eagle Scout and an accomplished musician. He attended Syracuse University until his enlistment in the Army in 1942. He served in the Army Air Force from 1942 through 1945. In 1944, he married Gloria Anne Millett (deceased) of Yonkers, NY and lived there and raised their family. Vernon was a skilled machinist and was also a sales representative. He was a sales associate for the Hoover Co. for over twenty-five years.

He was an active member of West Center Church in Younkers, a very active Boy Scout Leader and past Commander of his Leonard Morange American Legion Post 464 in Bronxville, NY. Since moving to Urbandale, he became a member of the Urbandale American Legion Post 663, the Iowa British Car Club and in 2005, he became a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Vernon is survived by his two sons, William R. (Barbara) Unger of Urbandale, Iowa and Arthur M. (Filippa) Unger of Stafford, VA; father of the late Trudy Anne Unger of Younkers, NY; four grandchildren, Charles E. (Jennifer) Unger of Overland Park, KS, Bryan T. Unger of Arlington, VA, Melissa A. Unger of Richmond, VA and Heather M. Unger of Stafford, VA; and brother, Raymond Frederick Unger of Simpsonville, SC.

There will be a funeral mass on Friday, October 27, 2006 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 7075 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines followed by a luncheon then burial at 1:30.p.m. at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Visitation will be held Thursday at St. Francis from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7.p.m. vigil and prayer service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to his church.
