George Barton 73, passed away from cancer peacefully at home Thursday, December 28, 2006. George was born in Des Moines, IA, January 2, 1933. For many years George was the owner - operator of Ankeny True Value Hardware.

For thirty-five years, George had a second career in racing, from car builder/owner to race promoter and track co-owner. George won the Boone Nationals four times during his racing career. He served eight-years in the Navy Reserves and was active in the Ankeny Chamber of Commerce and Rotary.

His parents, Clarence and Ursula Barton; one sister, Lois Tannen; one brother, Lloyd Barton, and his son, Rodney preceded George in death.

George is survived by his wife, Bonnie; his son, Randy (Cheryl); daughter, Vickie (Bob) Withers; daughter-in-law, Janet; step-sons, Scott (Pat) Everett, Terry (Susan) Everett; step-daughter, Marsha Everett; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.

Ankeny First United Methodist Church will hold a Visitation Tuesday, January 2, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m. and a Memorial Service on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at 11 a.m.
