Jean Martin
Des Moines

Jean Marie Martin died Wednesday, June 8, of Alzheimer's. Her body has been cremated and a private family service will be held at a later date at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Jean was born June 3, 1922 in Pocahontas. She and her late husband, Ross raised their four children in Mason City, IA; Austin, Minnesota; finally moving to Des Moines in 1963. Jean was a domestic whiz, excelling at sewing, knitting, cooking, ceramics, and made the best pumpkin pie around. Jean was an avid volunteer in the 70's and 80's, putting in countless hours for her church (Central Presbyterian), PEO and Iowa Methodist Medical center. She also loved the game of golf, and played until she was unable, due to her Alzheimer diagnosis. She and Ross loved to entertain, and hosted the annual Toastmaster picnic "at the ranch" each summer for many years. She always supported all the activities that Ross loved (flying, Toastmasters, football, baseball, Indy car racing, hunting, you name it) which was so much more than most wives would have tolerated.

Her children, Ross (Susan), Tom (Bernice), Julie Martin Kingery and Sue Freeman (Don) are left to celebrate her life. Her eleven grandchildren and 13 great-grand- children; her sister Rose; and her brother Bill (Alice) also survive her.

A special thanks to the staff at Ramsey Home the last six years; and prior to that, the staff at 3801 Grand. Jean's years with Alzheimer's were filled with healthcare workers that treated her with dignity, respect and kindness. If you wish to send a card, please address it to 4309 Allison Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50310 in care of Sue Freeman.
