Elizabeth "Bess" C. Chandler
Des Moines

Elizabeth Chandler, 97, died June 21, 2005, at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with burial at Glendale Cemetery.

Elizabeth was born in New York, New York and moved to Des Moines shortly thereafter. She met her husband of 72-years, Everett while attending Lincoln High School in Des Moines. They married and lived on Courtland Drive for 11 years and later moved to San Francisco, California where they stayed for 47 years. She took early retirement from Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and later retired as secretary from the City and County of San Francisco. Five retirement years were spent in Lake Havasau, Arizona, and they later moved to Fallbrook, California for 17 years before returning home to Des Moines in 1991.

She is a member of the National Council of Catholic Women, Catholic Daughters Organization, Federal Reserve Bank Club, St. Augustin Altar, Rosary Society, The Franciscans-St. Anthony's Guild, Auxiliary of American Legion, and a life member of the Canton Lincoln High School Alumni Association.

Music was her gift and passion. Throughout her lifetime, Elizabeth volunteered as an organ and piano accompanist at Catholic masses and schools. Her generosity helped many young people attain Catholic educations - many whom she never met.

Elizabeth is survived by her best friend and husband, Everett Chandler and several God-children. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Care Tonini Chapel, where a rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Anthony's Scholarship Foundation.
