Richard Garner Richard "Dick" Duane Garner, 75, passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2004 at Mercy Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 15 at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 4110 Allison Avenue in Beaverdale. Born May 4, 1929 in Madison, WI, he was the son of Ernest Van Ness (E.V.) and Bernice Garner. He graduated from North High School in 1947. On September 11, 1948, Dick married Marian Frances Grady in Des Moines and they raised three daughters whom he cherished. Dick served in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Koran Conflict and the National Guard. He worked at Garner Printing until his retirement in 1988 and was a past president of the North High School Booster Club. A long-time resident of Ankeny, he was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was also a huge Chicago Cubs, Iowa Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. Active in the DesMoinaires Barbershop Chorus, he was named "Barbershopper of the Year" in 1971. Dick was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines and a former deacon at the Ankeny Presbyterian Church. He will be missed by his wife of 56 years, Marian of Ankeny; three daughters, Debi (John Richards) Garner of Ankeny, Sandi Jewett of Lincoln, NE, and Kristy (Scott) Mahan of Cedar Rapids; and four grandchildren, Greg and Lauren Jewett and Connor and Colin Mahan. A sister, Judy (Bill) Deatsch of Truckee, CA, and a brother, Ed Garner of Des Moines also survive him. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today, December 14 at Brooks Funeral Care at 7975 University Blvd in Clive. Memorial donations may be made to the Animal Rescue League, the Pride of Iowa Barbershop Chorus or to the family for other charitable giving. |
