Mildred Hettinger

Mildred Mary Hettinger died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines on September 15, 2004. She had been a resident of Ramsey Home for several years.

Mildred was born to John A. and Mary Hanks in Corydon, IA, on September 25, 1904, the youngest of four children. The family moved to Des Moines in 1912 and she lived the rest of her life there.

She was a graduate of East High School, the first of her family to complete a high school education. On June 30, 1922 she married Harvey H. Hettinger, a veteran of World War I. Mildred worked at the Book Bindery on East 22nd and Grand and in the Alteration Department of Younkers both for many years.

She was a member of Grand Park Christian Church and the Union Park Garden Club. She loved doing handwork and her flowers gardens were the talk of the neighborhood.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brothers and numerous other relatives including a very special nephew, Orbin W. Hanks. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Ron Koeppel; four grandchildren, Todd Koeppel (Heather), Dr. Traci Duncanson (Michael), Terry and Tammi McClain (Garrett); and nine great-grandchildren. Included in those who survive is a niece, Mildred Maxine Rich of California who loved her very much.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, September 20 at Brooks Funeral Care-University Chapel, with Fr. Wayne Gubbels presiding. The family will greet friends on Sunday from 5 until 7 p.m. with a Wake service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grant Park Christian Church, St. Theresa Catholic Church or Holy Trinity Catholic Church in her name.
